So there are nights where I just cannot fall asleep despite the aid of melatonin. When these awful nights occur, my mind wanders quite fast and quite randomly. A few nights ago, I had a crazy train of thought which led me to the idea of a "pirate photography" business name. Tonight I created the logo for it. Here is that logo with inverted versions of each other......I really want a flag

The last few days I've come across things that inspired me to create sarcastic parody designs. Little things strike my eye and remind me of something ridiculously non-related. The first was while I was surfing the net and saw Mitt Romney presidential campaign pins. I looked at the photo of a handful of pins and immediately thought it looked like toothpaste...ya know, that defined toothpaste swirl on every toothbrush ad. So for about 30 minutes or so before I left for work earlier this week, I created this. It's not the best quality since I had a short amount of time before I had to leave for work, but this was more for the comedic idea behind the design of Mr. Romney's logo. I feel like it's one of those "once you see it, you can't unsee it" designs. Moving onto number 2 of this post...After shooting golf for one of our studio's high schools, I went back to the studio with some down time. Everyone at the studio was going to go see a magician that we photographed earlier in the month. He had a show coming up and invited the studio as his guests. Now, since I was waiting for the time to leave, a co-worker and I were playfully teasing about two other chatty co-workers deserve a logo and he mentioned that I should create a logo for which he named "World Series of Talking". So, while I was at the studio, I was playing around with creating one, but never finished it. However, a couple nights ago, I decided to make a second attempt at it with a whole new design. Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to the World Series of Talking.
As all NBA fans know, especially Chicago Bulls fans, #1 on the team Derrick Rose was injured during the playoffs last year and never returned. The Bulls incredible season was washed out by being eliminated from the first round. However, a new season will emerge, a team will return, and #1 is working harder than ever to seek vengeance to redeem a lost season.
A video that was made was relating Derrick Rose to The Dark Knight Rises that was released this past July. Here is that video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPjb26KdA3s&feature=g-vrec After watching it, I got inspired to create a poster. This is said poster. is the motto for a t-shirt my buddy Mike and I thought up for a mud run in Decatur at the end of September. The birth of it came from a text from Mike sent me about him training for it on hands and knees and ways that people would think he's "The Squatch"...or in layman's terms, Bigfoot. My reply to him was, "The squatch still runs upright." After I sent it, I immediately followed up with another text saying that that should be a t-shirt. So, after work, I designed this for our t-shirts for the mud run. Three variations with the third kinds just playing around with gradients. I sent this to Mike and he said, "Dig it!" followed by "Put all three of those on the shirt." I can safely say, that will happen.
Boy, has it been a while! Two reasons...One, I haven't updated my website/blog in a while. Two, I haven't seen my buddy Mike in quite a while. In my latest trip to Decatur, I got to photograph Mike and Maggie for their engagement. It was hot...very hot....the weather, the shoot, and the habaneros.
ANYWAY...I had a fun time visiting Mike and meeting Maggie. We went around Decatur visiting Scovil Zoo's Rock Garden, Merchant Street downtown, The Avon Theatre, and some other random walls. All in all, it was a successful trip and shoot. In case the title doesn't give it away, I FINALLY HAVE MY 5DMKIII! It's been a long wait, but having it for less than a day, I love it. Upgrading from a Rebel t1i to this mamma jamma is incredible from the new features to the crazy improved AF system and other technical specs to the size and ergononomics! I finally don't feel like I'm swallowing my camera in my hand. The 5Dmkiii fits in my hand so much more comfortably. While the megapixel increase from 15 to 22 is great, I'm indifferent only because I was focused on different aspects. That being the AF system and the ISO range/noise. Here's the incredible part about my upgrade...I went from a measly 9 point system on the t1i to the BRAND NEW 61 pt AF system also found on the 1DX! Holy crap! Now I won't have problems trying to get a focus point without having to re-composing. Also, the ISO/noise is a huge improvement for me. My t1i 1. only has 1 stop increments, 2. only really works up to about 6400 not including the High expansions, and 3. high ISO produced high noise. Now that I have the 5dmkiii, I have a lot more choices with ISO range with 1/3 stop increments, ISO range that has a native 25,600, and a helluva lot cleaner noise at high ISO.
I could go on and on and on and on about improvements, but this would turn into a novel. But alas, the 5dmkiii has a lot of subtle features and what not. And why not, here's a photo comparing my t1i and 5dmkii... The newest Canon body has been brought to light. The 5DmkIII is going to be awesome. I have pre-ordered it today as of 12:35pm. The first shipment of cameras has been projected to ship at the end of March. Since the pre-orders are flying in to stores everywhere I am hoping to get mine by June...I really really hope it will be sooner than that though. I am upgrading significantly from a Canon t1i to this new beauty of a beast! My little t1i that could, did...but it's time for an upgrade. It's not going anywhere though. I still have to use it until my 5dmkIII arrives and the t1i will become a back up camera if needed.
So I like to experiment with cooking on occasion and about two years ago I made a chicken dish that I threw together using teriyaki and caribbean jerk spice along with some lemon juice and other spices. I called it, teriyjerk chicken. It was a hit with everyone that tried it.
Sunday, I went grocery shopping with my mom and saw sesame oil. I grabbed it and some sesame seeds. She asked me what that was for and I said...In case I want to try to make sesame chicken. Now, last night my mom asks if I could make it for today. I've never made a sauce/glaze ever from scratch so I had to do some R&D...Earlier today I experimented with trying to make it. First try ended up turning into a sesame caramel when it cooled down. Second try I got a sauce that worked out, but it was only for a test. So tonight I had to basically double the amount with no measurements from earlier. Anyway, the sauce turned out great, the chicken was breaded and fried. The sides were tasty jasmine rice and edamame. Here are two platings I tried right when it was all done cooking. Well, since I made that light box I've been trying really hard to figure out how to light it. At the very beginning like in the photo from the previous post, I used my Canon 580EX II Speedlite as my only light source. Doing that I had use my bracket and sync cord which added another thing to worry about. So, I ended up buying a cheap 500 watt work light from Home Depot to use instead. I also moved my light box to the downstairs spare room to make it more of a "studio". Now my set up is on a table with my new light mounted to my tripod. (I had to modify one of my tripod quick release mounts with the screw from the work light so it could fit snug). A lot of trial and error and frustration occurred. I knew product photography was difficult, but doing it homemade style makes it even more of a challenge...(post processing helps quite a bit)
But anyway, here are a couple shots from the first experiment, the rest are in my tabletop page. Today, I decided to make a light box from a cardboard box, some posterboard for the sweep and a cut up shower curtain for the diffusing walls. Here is the quick set up and the result after a crop and quick white balance.
